A rule here is to not use .bmps if possible. Some of you may not know how to convert your pictures,so to prevent you from having an excuse,I made this ; )
1. Open up any paint program(basic Microsoft Paint will do,but PSP or Adobe Photoshop are preferred). 2. Press "File" at the top of the page. Then press "Open" 3. Go to wherever the picture is. 4. Click on it. 5. Click "Open" 6. Your picture should show up now. Go to "File" again, and this time, click "Save As" 7. Select where you want to save it to(if it's different than where it originally was),and then from the drop down box at the bottom of the screen, select your picture type. 8. Press "Save" and you're done.
A note about picture file types: In paint,.jpg will show up blury, and .gif even more so. In PSP or Adobe Photoshop,a .jpg will still show up blury, but a .gif won't at all. In Adobe Photoshop, this can be prevented by changing the image quality to excellent(Thanks to CinnyDog for that information). A .png will show up clear in any of those programs. Best choices for shows etc: .png,.gif Best choice if you have paint: .png .png,.jpg,and .gif are the most commonly used file types, and all the image host I've seen allow them to be uploaded.

They can be slow loading for people that have dial up, and if there are a lot on one page(in a show with signatures, avatars, and show poses), it can end up being slow loading for anybody. Converting is really easy, especially now with the new petza where the picture can be taken automatically in .png or .gif format, and some image hosts convert pics when they upload them.
